Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) have been used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that are oil and water repellent such as Teflon®, StainMaster® carpets, Scotchgard®, and GoreTex®. They have also been used to make surfactants that are used in firefighting foams and mist suppressants for metal plating operations.

PFAS are extremely stable and persistent in the environment, and as a result can migrate easily. These properties give PFAS the tendency to concentrate in the food chain, as well as be found globally even in remote locations in soil, groundwater, surface water, rain, ice caps, air, plants, animal tissue, and blood serum. Over the past decade, concerns that two common PFAS (PFOA and PFOS) are environmentally persistent has resulted in some industries developing newer substitute fluorinated materials such as HFPO-DA (known as GenX) and ADONA.

U.S. EPA developed their first reference method for PFAS in drinking water in September 2008 (EPA Method 537) which was employed in the Third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3) sampling cycle. Weck Laboratories has provided analytical support for all of the EPA UCMR monitoring cycles including the analysis of PFAS by EPA 537 during the UCMR3 sampling cycle. Weck is also a Department of Defense Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOD ELAP) approved testing lab for an expanded list of PFAS compounds.

Weck Laboratories can analyze the following 28 PFAS targets in water, soils and food matrices:
