The Los Angeles Reqional Water Quality Control Board has recently specified the monitoring of constituents of emerging concern (CECs) in work plans for several water reclamation facilities. Among these CECs are hormones, alkylphenols, pharmaceuticals, polybrominated diphenylethers, personal care products and newer use pesticides. The reporting limits are in the parts-per-trillion (nanogram per liter) range! This target compound list requires several state-of-the-art analytical methods employing gas and liquid chromatographic separation followed by mass spectral detection and quantitation using several different ionization and scanning modes. The fate and transport of these new chemicals of emerging concern is an important facet of information for water recycling and re-use applications.  See list of target analytes with Weck Laboratories' reporting limits.
